Savannah's CONVO- A Journey of Growth, Forgiveness, and Hope: Savannah Eley and Her Mom Monica

Recovery is a process of rediscovery, connection, and healing. This month for Cure the Conversation, we highlight the inspiring journey of Savannah Eley and her mom Monica—a story that showcases resilience, the power of forgiveness, and hope for the future.

Savannah’s Story: Rediscovery Through Recovery

Savannah’s journey with substance use disorder (SUD) is just one chapter of her life. She wants people to see her as more than her struggles: “My substance use disorder is just a small part of who I am today. I fought so hard to become someone who is present in the moments that matter the most—someone my loved ones and I can be proud of.”

Today, Savannah lives with purpose. Her family motivates her, and her passion for helping others on their recovery journey brings her joy. She has rediscovered hobbies like reading and spending time in the mountains with her hound dogs or simply enjoying quiet moments with her family.

Her perspective on life has shifted: “Life is so precious. Finding my connection with God helped me when I couldn’t help myself. I’ve learned that substance use disorder can happen to anyone, no matter how they were raised. It doesn’t define who you are.”

Savannah has also achieved incredible milestones. Her proudest moment? Buying her daughter a brand-new car for her birthday—a powerful symbol of how far she’s come.

Monica’s Journey: From Fear to Pride

As a caregiver, Monica faced the many challenges of loving someone with SUD. She remembers the chaos and heartbreak vividly: "That whole journey was so hard. I was trying to protect my grandkids while dealing with lies and stolen money. I felt like I had failed as a parent."

During those difficult years, her relationship with Savannah was strained. Monica recalls being on “high alert” every time her daughter was around, unsure of what to expect.

But as Savannah embraced recovery, Monica saw her daughter transform into someone beyond her imagination: "The person in recovery has a strong drive and a purpose. She loves herself and has forgiven herself. Today, she’s my best friend—someone I admire and look up to."

Building Hope and a Brighter Future

Savannah’s recovery has given her a new perspective and a mission: to help others navigate the challenges of substance use disorder. She hopes to build pregnancy stabilization programs for women struggling with SUD and break down the misconceptions surrounding recovery.

“Recovery isn’t about being perfect; progress is what matters, no matter how slow. Your substance use disorder does not define you. Even those in active use are still people with the biggest hearts who deserve help and compassion.”

For Monica, Savannah’s journey has been equally transformative. Watching her daughter find her purpose and advocate for others has been an inspiration: "Savannah is passionate about breaking stigma, educating others, and providing resources to those in need. She’s strong, honest, and true to herself."

A Message of Resilience

When asked about her advice to her younger self, Savannah reflects: "Life will be hard, but you were made for these challenges. You will face heartbreak, but the outcome will be beautiful. Remember, you are loved, heard, and seen."

For families and individuals facing similar struggles, Savannah’s story is a reminder that recovery is possible, and healing—while not always linear—can lead to a life full of love and purpose.

Monica adds that forgiveness and open conversations were key in their relationship: “We own the good and the bad, take accountability, and always end with ‘I love you.’”

Moving Forward Together

Savannah and Monica’s journey highlights the importance of breaking down stigma, supporting those in recovery, and celebrating progress. As Savannah says: “Progress matters, no matter how slow. Recovery is about showing up, being kind to yourself, and realizing your struggles do not define you.”

At Cure the Conversation, we honor Savannah and Monica for sharing their story and inspiring others to keep moving forward. Together, we can break the stigma surrounding substance use disorder and bring hope to those who need it most. Let’s keep the conversation going. -Much Love, Amanda Paiz
